CHELSEA CHASE RODWELL

It seems that Chelsea are moving ever closer towards lowering the age of their squad by bringing in Everton midfielder Jack Rodwell. A number of reports have surfaced stating that Chelsea are closer to any other club to signing Jack Rodwell from Everton.

It is thought that Andre Villas-Boas has made Jack Rodwell as his first priority in the January transfer window. Even if it is not possible in January, then Chelsea are most likely to come back for him in the summer. It is thought that Everton would be willing to sell the player for around £ 20 million given that he has endured a number of injury problems in the last few seasons.

As a result, he has been overshadowed by the likes of Barkley, who made his debut recently. Manchester United were once the favourites to sign the youngster from Everton, but it seems that the London club has moved into the pole position to secure the services of the 20-year-old. Other clubs who are keeping tabs on the situation include the likes of Manchester City and Tottenham. Jack Rodwell is currently out of the first team action due to a hamstring problem, but is expected to return soon.

“His development here has been good. He came on the scene very early but I’ll always think players will be better served being at Everton. I don’t think we’ll be selling because we need the money for the bank or anything like that. But there have been some really big players sold,” Moyes said when asked about his future. Everton have been suffering from a number of financial problems of late and the £ 20 million generated from the sale of Jack Rodwell will prove to be a massive war chest for David Moyes in his efforts to strengthen the team.

OWEN KNOCKED FOR SIX

Manchester United striker Michael Owen has been ruled out for six more weeks, as he strides to establish himself as one of the regular players for Manchester United. A lot has been spoken about Michael Owen just prior to the transfer window, but nothing materialised as Owen ended up staying at Manchester United. However, he has not been able to get a lot of game time. The game time that she has got so far have been mostly in meaningless Carling cup matches and so forth. The latest setback to the former England striker comes as a major disappointment.

He is expected to be out of action until at least Christmas, which is once again a major blow for Sir Alex Ferguson as well. Dimitar Berbatov has not been performing as well as in the past seasons. He would have been hoping that at least Michael Owen steps up to the plate this season. The former England striker suffered the injury setback in the 2-0 win over their Champions League opponents Otelul Galati. He played only 10 min in the match before suffering the injury and had to be taken off. Manchester United especially need the services of Michael Owen at this time.

They are currently trailing leaders Manchester City by five points. Even though Manchester United traditionally perform well in the second half of the season, the presence of Michael Owen could have added a wealth of experience to the current crop of young strikers like Danny Welbeck. Still, the injury has not been as bad as initially feared, as Michael Owen will be able to return to first-team action from January onwards. Manchester United released the following statement: “Michael has a thigh muscle injury and will be out for six weeks or so.”
